UN Chief Welcomes Gaza Hostage Release, Urges Ceasefire Adherence

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed approval of the release of Israeli hostages previously held in Gaza while urging all conflicting parties to maintain adherence to established ceasefire commitments. Speaking from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Monday, Guterres stated "I very much welcome the release of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza," while acknowledging the significance of their impending reunification with families "after the immense suffering they have endured" during captivity.

The UN chief urged all involved parties to "build on this momentum and to honor their commitments under the ceasefire to end the nightmare in Gaza," emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining the current diplomatic progress. Guterres reiterated his previous appeal for the release of remains belonging to individuals who perished while in captivity, underscoring the humanitarian dimensions of the conflict resolution process. He confirmed the United Nations "is working to support all efforts to end the conflict in Gaza and alleviate the suffering of civilians" through its various operational agencies and diplomatic channels.

The secretary-general's statements coincide with ongoing implementation of the ceasefire arrangement brokered between conflicting parties to facilitate humanitarian assistance and prisoner-hostage exchanges throughout the Gaza Strip. The initial phase of the Gaza ceasefire framework took effect Friday under the peace proposal advanced by US President Donald Trump, representing the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the conflict's escalation two years ago.

The ceasefire implementation and hostage releases occur against the backdrop of extensive humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israeli military operations since October 2023 have resulted in more than 67,800 Palestinian fatalities, with women and children comprising the majority of casualties.
