🇨🇦🇹🇷 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has commented on defence cooperation with Türkiye, saying on October 23 that Canada is open to both buying Turkish military capabilities and building defence industry partnerships.

Speaking to reporters in Istanbul during his visit to Türkiye, Carney discussed energy, defence, Ukraine and trade with the USA. He said Canadian Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson and Export Development Canada head Alison Nankivell had held talks the day before, that the contacts would continue and that private sector representatives would also meet. On energy, he pointed to Türkiye’s large demand and its wish to diversify supplies, with clean energy at the centre, and said talks on Canadian CANDU reactors had intensified, with the Turkish government possibly deciding toward the end of the year, perhaps around COP31.

“I believe about 80 percent of Türkiye’s defence needs are produced here. That is not the case in Canada. We have a lot to learn from Türkiye about what kind of industry we can create in our country,” he said.

Carney added that he would lean toward a partnership offering complementary technologies, citing defence cooperation between Türkiye and Ukraine as an example, and noted Türkiye’s progress in drone technology. He said he had discussed support for Ukraine with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, that Canada coordinates that support directly with Ukraine rather than through the EU, and that he had spoken several times in the past week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy about Ukraine’s defence situation and Starlink. Asked about reports that SpaceX CEO Elon Musk ordered Starlink slowed, he said a slowdown would have humanitarian consequences, including loss of life, and that Canada does not want to depend on a single service provider. He also said Canada has no intention of interfering in US democratic processes, is ready to negotiate a trade deal with the USA and will not become the 51st US state.

Indian woman criticises Modi gov’t over Israeli visitors

🇮🇳 A woman in India has criticised the Modi government for allowing Israeli soldiers to visit the country, arguing that some Israeli visitors have served in military operations in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. In an interview, she argued that some visitors were involved in genocide and war crimes and said Israeli-only establishments were emerging in parts of India. She also referred to a video showing an Italian woman being denied entry to a restaurant or Chabad house. The woman argued that such incidents reflected exclusionary practices and a hierarchy within Indian communities. She said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was unlikely to act because of its close ties with Israel, urging ordinary Indians to challenge these practices when encountering Israeli visitors in Dharamshala and Dharamkot.

📊 🇮🇳 An analysis of police shootings in Uttar Pradesh linked to alleged cow smuggling has found that Muslims accounted for nearly 93% of those injured since 2020. The review, conducted by the Washington-based Center for the Study of Organized Hate and the Associated Press, covered 645 incidents involving 772 victims. In 627 of those cases where names or identifying details were available, researchers were able to assess the victims' backgrounds.

The researchers said injuries were frequently to the lower leg just below the knee and that the count, based only on police-publicized incidents, is likely an undercount. The data comes as police encounters have intensified under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who took office in March 2017. Police figures obtained by the AP show 12,890 injured and 316 killed in encounters through Oct. 13, 2026, including 110 Muslims. Muslims make up about a fifth of the state's population.
