Pakistan coordinates with Iran and Singapore

Writing on X, Dar said Pakistan is maintaining close coordination with Abbas Araghchi regarding the detained crews and maritime developments.

He noted that the vessels remain close to Singaporean waters and thanked Singapore for its cooperation in addressing the situation.

Islamabad also expressed readiness to assist with the transfer of Iranian nationals back to Iran through Pakistani territory if necessary.

According to that report, the Trump administration was preparing to restart naval escort operations for commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz after a temporary pause. Regional tensions have escalated sharply since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, triggering Iranian retaliation and the closure of the strategic waterway.

Ceasefire and blockade

Displaced Palestinians described increasingly unlivable conditions inside camps across Gaza. Residents said overcrowding, waste accumulation and the presence of insects and rodents have made daily life extremely difficult.

In testimonies shared from the territory, families reported that hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians are concentrated in limited areas with inadequate sanitation and little access to clean water or medical supplies.

‘Unimaginable consequences’

Oil markets react to Middle East tensions

Global oil prices have experienced significant volatility since the escalation of conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Markets have reacted sharply to attacks on energy facilities, military developments, and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.

The Strait of Hormuz carries a substantial share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports, making stability in the region critical for international markets, including energy-importing economies such as Türkiye.

Congress calls for tighter oversight

US lawmakers have urged regulators to closely monitor unusual trading patterns connected to geopolitical events. Officials warn that rapid changes in war policy, sanctions, and diplomatic negotiations can create opportunities for abuse if privileged information reaches financial actors before public announcements are made.

The reported investigation is centered on oil futures contracts traded through major exchanges, including CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange, where energy investors frequently respond to developments in the Middle East.

Türkiye climbs in Islamic finance rankings

Addressing the summit at the Istanbul Financial Center, Yilmaz stated that Türkiye significantly improved its standing in the Islamic Finance Development Index, rising from 23rd place among 82 countries in 2012 to 10th among 140 countries by 2025. He noted that the country currently holds nearly $127 billion in Islamic finance assets, placing it among the leading markets globally.

Yilmaz emphasized that participation finance is no longer limited to Gulf countries or Muslim-majority economies. Financial hubs including Malaysia, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Hong Kong, and Singapore have increasingly adopted participation-based financial systems through new regulations and specialized market structures.

Global Islamic finance market continues to grow

According to Yilmaz, global Islamic finance assets expanded from $2.5 trillion in 2018 to nearly $6 trillion in 2024 and are projected to approach $9.7 trillion by 2029. He said Türkiye aims to strengthen its role in this expanding ecosystem through investment products, sukuk issuances, digital banking, and broader financial diversification.

The vice president also highlighted the importance of lease certificates, known as sukuk, which Türkiye first introduced domestically in 2012. Since then, these instruments have become a regular component of the country’s participation finance strategy and liquidity management system.

Participation banking sector gains momentum

Mehmet Ali Akben, head of the Participation Banks Association of Türkiye (TKBB), said the sector currently operates through 11 participation banks across 1,506 branches with more than 22,000 employees nationwide. He revealed that total banking assets in the sector reached 4.3 trillion Turkish liras by March 2026, while net profits climbed to 86 billion liras at the end of last year.

Akben said sustainable balance sheets, digital transformation, and customer-focused banking services have accelerated growth in the industry. He also noted that both public and private institutions are playing a larger role in expanding participation finance instruments in Türkiye.

International institutions back Türkiye’s strategy

International representatives attending the summit underlined Türkiye’s growing importance in the Islamic finance landscape. Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, secretary-general of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, said participation banking in Türkiye is advancing rapidly and becoming more visible within the global economy.

Officials from the International Finance Corporation, part of the World Bank Group, also expressed support for Türkiye’s participation banking sector. IFC representatives said they are working with several Turkish participation banks through trade finance programs and welcomed the sector’s modernization efforts and increasing international integration.

High-profile attendance and historical context

The ceremony drew top officials including Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler and his Estonian counterpart Hanno Pevkur. Also present were ARCA Defense Chairman Ismail Terlemez, board member Ozgur Rodoplu, and SAHA Istanbul Chairman Haluk Bayraktar. Guler recalled a similar signing in Estonia five years ago involving vehicles from Turkish armored manufacturer Otokar, stating: “Now, I would like to express my great pleasure in being here at the signing ceremony of such an agreement between our Estonian friends and ARCA, one of our country’s leading companies.”

Jobs, ammunition, and NATO commitment

Pevkur described the moment as “historical,” adding: “Today, we have the honor to sign the declaration that ARCA Defense will establish an ammunition factory in Estonia, which deepens our cooperation.” He confirmed that Estonia already works closely with several Turkish firms. “This is a very big investment in Estonia. I would like to thank ARCA Defense for that tremendous investment, creating roughly 1,000 jobs in Estonia and starting the production of long-range artillery ammunition for Estonia, for Europe and for NATO countries,” Pevkur said. The Estonian minister concluded: “So this is an extremely important day for all of us.”

Survey methodology

Nearly 2,000 parents with children between the ages of 6 and 23 were surveyed between October 2024 and January 2025. Participants were asked whether their child had experienced unequal treatment or bullying by schools or fellow students during the previous five years.

Unequal treatment

Parents reported unequal treatment in grading at 18%, disciplinary sanctions at 19%, and academic orientation decisions at 14%. About 70% of parents who reported unequal treatment said it was linked to a legally prohibited criterion such as disability, physical appearance, social background, skin color, religion, nationality, or gender. The survey said health status or disability was "by far the leading discrimination criterion."

Bullying statistics

Meanwhile, three in 10 parents said their child had experienced bullying, while one in 10 reported cyberbullying. The findings highlight ongoing challenges in French schools regarding student welfare and equal treatment.

China's response

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters Wednesday that Beijing will continue working for de-escalation of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and "making utmost effort to protect the safety and security of Chinese ships and crew." "We hope relevant parties will act prudently, avoid further escalation, resolve disputes through dialogue, and restore peace and tranquility in the Strait soon," he said.

Continued strikes

The army said it struck more than 15 sites it claimed were Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. Videos released by the army and footage circulating on social media appeared to show that the targeted sites were homes and buildings. Lebanese media earlier reported that three people were killed and a fourth was wounded in Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon on Thursday.

Ceasefire violations

The fresh attacks came after at least 18 people were injured in more than 60 Israeli attacks across Lebanon on Wednesday. Despite a ceasefire announced April 17 and extended until May 17, the Israeli army continues daily strikes in Lebanon and widespread demolition of homes in dozens of villages, echoing its years-long devastation of Gaza.

Lebanese casualties

Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed at least 2,715 people, wounded 8,353, and displaced more than 1.6 million, about one-fifth of the population, according to the latest official figures. Israel occupies areas in southern Lebanon, including some held for decades, and has advanced about 10 kilometers inside the southern border during the current conflict.

US military deepens AI integration

The contract was signed through the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office and is considered one of the department’s largest AI-related deals to date.

Meta Platforms, which acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI last year, has indirectly strengthened its position in the expanding military AI ecosystem through the partnership.

Dan Tadross, head of Scale AI’s public sector division, said the Defense Department had been “pushing the limits” of the earlier agreement, describing the new deal as evidence of the Pentagon’s determination to rapidly adopt artificial intelligence technologies.

Role in defense strategy and operations

Scale AI is already involved in the Defense Innovation Unit’s Thunderforge initiative, a program focused on embedding AI into military planning and operational strategy. The company is also participating in President Donald Trump’s Golden Dome homeland defense project.

The expanded contract aligns with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s broader push to remove bureaucratic barriers and accelerate AI deployment across defense infrastructure.

Tech sector partnerships grow

The Pentagon has increasingly partnered with major technology firms as it modernizes classified military networks and data systems. Earlier this month, new agreements were also finalized with NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services and Reflection AI to expand the use of AI across defense operations. "People are unable to access parts of Gaza where land reserves and critical facilities, such as solid waste landfills, are present. They are also unable to travel abroad or access the West Bank, where services such as specialized health care are available to them. People who are allowed to exit as part of medical evacuations represent a tiny fraction of those who need services that are unavailable on a daily basis in Gaza," he said.

Food assistance

Citing the World Food Programme (WFP), Dujarric said more than 1.6 million people receive food parcels, hot meals, bread, or cash assistance each month. "Yet, more than six months since the declaration of a ceasefire, WFP said hunger hasn't disappeared, noting high malnutrition levels. One in five families eats only one meal every day."

Limited results

Responding to Anadolu's question, Dujarric acknowledged limited results from repeated warnings. "We hope that others besides you hear us. These are issues we've raised with the Israeli parties on a daily basis. We've also raised them with American counterparts. The bottom line is there hasn't been much positive movement on that. We don't control the system. Our colleagues see with their own eyes exactly where the situation is. They know what's needed, and we're just not getting it."

Gaza war context

Israel launched a war on Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 Palestinians. Despite a ceasefire since Oct. 10, 2025, Israel has continued deadly attacks and a blockade, killing 837 Palestinians and injuring 2,381 others.

Solar energy expansion

Tarik Sarvan, chairman of Turkish solar technology company CW Enerji, said the firm exports around 5−6 million worth of products monthly from Türkiye to the US and is considering investment opportunities on a state-by-state basis. "We are trying to create a gateway where we can sell our products," he said, stressing that production would remain in Türkiye while US operations would focus on assembly and sales.

Robotics and health tech

Bakit Baydaliev, CEO of DOF Robotics, said the US already accounts for 40% of the company's market, with plans to expand immersive entertainment businesses across multiple states. RealWorks Product and Marketing Director Fulya Bayram said the company aims to expand its AI-powered health care platform HaloScape and strengthen ties with US firms such as Nvidia.

Dental and software startups

Dr. Efe Celebi, founder of Dentgroup, said his company dentalPrices has expanded into Europe and is now planning to enter the US market by year's end. Other Turkish firms included IWRobotx, which views the US market as key to global expansion.

US state perspectives

Juliet Abdel of the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance said the region offers lower business costs and growth potential in aerospace, bioeconomy, and technology. Chris Chung, CEO of The Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, described Turkish companies as "globally minded," noting opportunities to sell and produce products in the US.

Anti-drone design

Speaking to Anadolu, SYS Chair Zafer Aral said the CANiK M3 FALCON was designed specifically for the changing battlefield, where low-cost drones and loitering munitions have become a major operational threat. "The CANiK M3 FALCON is a design developed entirely against drones, against Shahed-type drones, to neutralize drones from helicopters. It is currently being used effectively. The first shipments were made to Pakistan and Azerbaijan."

Operational concept

Aral said the system allows helicopters to respond to drones detected by radar, noting that Shahed-type drones fly at around 250 km/h, a speed helicopters can match. "When radar detects these drones, helicopters take off, open their doors and can neutralize them completely with FALCONs." The weapon can reach a firing rate of 1,200 rounds per minute from helicopters.

Shipments and integration

Shipments of more than 40 CANiK M3 FALCONs have started for integration into more than 20 helicopters in Azerbaijan. Initial products have also been sent to Pakistan. Preliminary work has begun for possible use on Türkiye's Gökbey helicopter, with tests completed in Konya alongside Aselsan.

Kosovo deal

Aral also announced a major agreement with Kosovo worth over $50 million to arm existing armored vehicles. "We will arm 100 land vehicles with turrets and 30x113 mm cannons."

New war concept

Aral said Türkiye has reached a new position in the global defense industry as warfare shifts toward unmanned systems. "Wars are now being fought with low-cost unmanned land, sea, and air vehicles and the most effective weapons these vehicles can carry. Today we can say Türkiye is the only country in the world that has this concept in hand."

Hamas leader's statement

On Wednesday, Hayya said his son had been seriously wounded in the Israeli attack, accusing Israel of seeking to achieve its goals through "pressure, killing and terrorism." Video footage from Gaza City showed mourners carrying Azzam's body from Al-Shifa Hospital before his burial. According to Palestinian sources, Azzam was Hayya's fourth son to have been killed by Israel.

Hezbollah commander killed

Separately, the Israeli army confirmed in a statement on Thursday that it had killed Ahmed Balout, whom it described as the commander of Hezbollah's Radwan Force, in a strike in Beirut's southern suburbs on Wednesday. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah on the Israeli claim.

Ceasefire violations

The strikes come as ceasefire deals in both Gaza and Lebanon remain fragile. In Gaza, Israel has continued daily violations since the October 2025 ceasefire, killing over 830 Palestinians. In Lebanon, cross-border attacks have continued despite a ceasefire announced on April 17 and extended until May 17.

Economic Mission

Prévot highlighted the Economic Mission to Türkiye, presided over by Belgian Queen Mathilde, set to take place May 10-14, with an estimated 400 participants. He said around 40 agreements will be signed on social security, transport, port management, logistics, and aerospace and defense. "Türkiye is the fifth largest export market for Belgium outside the European Union. So it means a lot," he said.

Defense and investment

Prévot noted that Türkiye's defense sector has grown by 300% in the last decade. He stressed the need for more investments from Turkish companies in Belgium, particularly in biopharmaceuticals, and emphasized creating opportunities in dredging, energy transition, offshore industry, and digital assets.

'Türkiye not to be contained'

When asked whether Europe should contain Türkiye alongside Russia and China, Prévot called it "weird" to use Ankara in the same sentence. "Türkiye is a NATO ally. It's also a European candidate for accession to the EU. So of course, Türkiye has not to be contained or constrained." He underlined the need to modernize the EU-Türkiye Customs Union.

Rules-based order

Prévot stressed Türkiye's role as a strategic partner in security, pointing to its mediation efforts for Ukraine and its stance on Middle East tensions. He described Türkiye as a "like-minded country" in defending multilateralism and territorial integrity, and as "the guardian of the southeastern flank of the alliance."

RSF parallel body

Last month, an RSF-affiliated administration based in Nyala in western Sudan created a parallel body to handle humanitarian affairs. It ordered foreign and local organizations to register within 30 days and required them to open offices in RSF-controlled areas within 45 days. The ministry warned that any institutional dealings with the RSF-run body would amount to "support for illegitimate parallel entities and a clear violation of Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

UN Security Council stance

The ministry said such unilateral steps contradict a UN Security Council statement in August 2025 against creating any parallel authorities or structures, which it described as "a direct threat to the stability of Sudan and the region." It urged all international and regional organizations accredited in Sudan to strictly respect the country's sovereignty, warning it would not tolerate any violations.

RSF parallel government

Last July, the RSF announced the formation of a parallel government in areas under its control, despite opposition from Sudanese authorities, the UN Security Council, the African Union, the EU and the Arab League. The RSF controls Darfur's five states except parts of North Darfur, while the army maintains authority over most remaining states.

Sudan conflict

Sudan has faced one of the world's worst humanitarian crises since war erupted in April 2023 between the army and the RSF over integration disputes. The conflict has triggered famine, killed tens of thousands, and displaced 13 million people.

"I sat down with deaf people and tried to communicate with them, and there were so many things I did not know. That constantly motivated me," Yıldırım told Anadolu. He said he initially used the term "disabled" frequently in the script before learning from members of the deaf community that the term could be uncomfortable. "We were warned that the term should not actually be used. While trying to sound polite, I learned how disturbing that expression could be. We then changed the script."

Equal experience for audiences

Yıldırım said one of the film's central ideas emerged from a line about dependence on devices. "We talk on phones and use microphones and speakers to make ourselves heard. That became a powerful starting point. I realized that, in a sense, we all hear through devices, and there is an equality in that." He added that deaf actors appear in 60% of the film, with subtitles allowing audiences anywhere to experience the film under the same conditions.

Filming techniques

Yıldırım noted that filming techniques had to be adjusted for sign language communication. "When communicating with our deaf friends, we had to position our camera framing accordingly. While we initially thought of close-up shots, we realized we needed to carefully select compositions because they communicate through their hands."

Anadolu's sign language initiative

Anadolu's Discrimination Line Director Tufan Aktaş discussed the "Eller Konuşur" (Hands Speak) project, which aims to provide hearing-impaired individuals with fast and accessible news coverage. "We increased our target threefold from 2025 to 2026. We had achieved a twofold increase in the past, and now we have set the bar higher," Kiziltan said. He said first-quarter results showed the company was largely on track to meet its 2026 target, adding that Sarsilmaz's order book was already nearing full capacity for 2027.

Kiziltan highlighted a strategic cooperation agreement signed at the fair with Escribano, one of Spain's leading turret manufacturers. "They have decided to purchase machine guns and cannons produced by TR Mekatronik from us and integrate them into their products. This will be a major cooperation. We may even create a joint project."

Speed advantage

Kiziltan said the Turkish defense industry's main advantage over global competitors is speed. "While our European competitors are very slow in this regard, we can act very quickly and effectively. This brings us more sales." He added that foreign delegations are especially interested in products tested in Türkiye, meeting NATO standards.

More computing power for Claude assistants

Under the agreement, Anthropic will use the facility’s massive computing resources to expand capacity for its Claude Pro and Claude Max AI assistants, raising usage limits for subscribers, according to NBC News.
