Fidan meets Arab League chief during Egypt diplomatic visit

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan convened with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy on Thursday in the Egyptian coastal city of El-Alamein, according to Turkish diplomatic sources. The meeting, part of Fidan's broader two-day diplomatic mission to Egypt, also included a separate discussion with Major General Hassan Mahmoud Rashad, director of Egypt's General Intelligence Service. While details of both talks remain undisclosed, the engagements underscore Ankara's deepening engagement with Cairo and regional institutions.

Strategic Agenda and Bilateral Cooperation

Fidan's agenda features a scheduled audience with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, alongside meetings with senior Egyptian officials. The discussions are expected to review bilateral relations and assess pending agreements, with a shared commitment to boosting mutual investments and achieving the $15 billion bilateral trade target. Energy cooperation will feature prominently, covering hydrocarbons, electricity grid integration, and mining partnerships. Military and defense industry collaboration also remains a priority, with both sides exploring avenues to expand existing ties.

Regional Crisis Management and Diplomatic Coordination

The Turkish minister will emphasize resolving regional issues through dialogue and regional ownership, highlighting cooperation within multilateral platforms like the R4 initiative, which unites Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. The visit includes the second Türkiye-Egypt Joint Planning Group meeting, co-chaired by Fidan and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, to prepare for the third High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council session planned in Türkiye for 2028. Fidan will also address pressing crises including Gaza, Libya, Sudan, and the Eastern Mediterranean, reaffirming Türkiye's support for diplomatic efforts to restore stability and ensure humanitarian aid flows.
