Field hospital with 1000 beds being built at Istanbul's Atatürk Airport
Construction work to build a field hospital for COVID-19 patients at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport was underway on April 09, 2020. On April 6, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced two more hospitals with a capacity of 1,000 beds each in Istanbul's either side divided by the Bosphorus Strait with one side in Europe and the other in Asia. The field hospital at Ataturk Airport will be completed within 45 days. Ataturk Airport was replaced in April 2019 by the new Istanbul Airport as Istanbul's main passenger hub. Turkey has so far reported 38,226 COVID-19 cases, and the death toll stands at 812. Since the virus emerged last December in the Chinese city of Wuhan, it has spread to at least 184 countries and regions, infecting nearly 1.5 million people and killing nearly 90,000, according to the U.S.' Johns Hopkins University.
