Police summon Kashmiri cricketer for wearing Palestine flag on helmet
Police in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir have summoned local cricketer Furqan Ul Haq for questioning for wearing a helmet bearing a Palestinian flag during a private cricket tournament in Jammu. The incident occurred during a Jammu and Kashmir Champions League match held in Muthi, on the outskirts of Jammu city.
According to police, a 14-day preliminary enquiry has been initiated under Section 173(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, citing the “sensitivity of the matter and its potential public order implications.” Officials said the inquiry would examine the facts, Ul Haq’s intent, background, and any possible linkages. During the match, players from the opposing team objected to the helmet sticker, after which Ul Haq was reportedly sent back without continuing his innings.
The episode has triggered political reactions. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti publicly expressed support for Palestine, while Awami Ittehad Party MLA Sheikh Khursheed criticised the police action as “unjustified.” BJP MLA RS Pathania, however, condemned the act, calling for strict action and alleging it promoted separatism. The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association said it had no involvement in the tournament.
