NATO withdraws Iraq mission staff to Italy as Middle East tensions spike

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has temporarily withdrawn all personnel from its mission in Iraq, moving them to a command center in Europe as security concerns mount across the Middle East.

Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe confirmed on Friday that the final contingent of NATO Mission Iraq staff departed safely on March 20. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s supreme allied commander Europe, expressed gratitude to Iraqi authorities and allied nations for facilitating the evacuation. “I would like to thank the Republic of Iraq and all the Allies who assisted in the safe relocation of NATO personnel from Iraq,” he said in a statement.

NATO officials emphasized that the relocation does not signal an end to the mission’s objectives. The alliance will continue its advisory and capacity-building efforts from the Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy. NATO Mission Iraq remains a non-combat initiative focused on strengthening Iraqi security institutions, helping Baghdad develop sustainable and inclusive forces capable of maintaining stability and preventing the resurgence of terrorist groups such as ISIS, also known as Daesh.

The decision to move personnel follows a sharp escalation in regional hostilities. Since February 28, joint US-Israeli strikes have targeted Iran, resulting in significant casualties and the killing of senior Iranian officials, including the former supreme leader. Iran has responded with retaliatory drone and missile strikes against Israel and locations in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations that host American military assets. The deteriorating security environment prompted NATO to reassess its operational posture in Iraq.

The alliance’s move reflects growing concerns over the expanding conflict zone. While NATO maintains its commitment to supporting Iraq’s long-term stability, the temporary relocation underscores the challenges of sustaining advisory missions in areas directly affected by broader geopolitical confrontations. NATO continues to monitor the situation closely, with officials noting that the mission’s core mandate remains unchanged despite the shift in location.
