Voter turnout exceeded 42% in Malaysia's Johor state election by early afternoon on Saturday, with state-run Bernama news agency reporting approximately 1.13 million ballots cast in the regional contest testing support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's ruling Madani coalition.

Over 1.13 million registered voters had cast ballots in Malaysia's Johor state election by early afternoon on Saturday, representing more than 42% turnout as polling stations remained open for the regional contest viewed as a critical gauge of national political sentiment.

Voting continues

State-run Bernama news agency reported the midday figures as voting continued across the southern Malaysian state. Polling began Saturday morning and is scheduled to conclude at 6 p.m. local time, with vote counting commencing immediately afterward and preliminary results expected later in the evening.

Electoral stakes

A total of 172 candidates are competing for 56 seats in the 16th Johor State Legislative Assembly. The election marks a significant test for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's ruling Madani coalition, which seeks to demonstrate continued public support ahead of Malaysia's next general election.

Political analysts regard the Johor poll alongside an upcoming Negeri Sembilan election in August as bellwethers for the ruling alliance's electoral viability. The coalition faces pressure to maintain its mandate amid economic challenges and shifting political alliances in the multi-ethnic federation.
