IAEA chief launches ATLAS initiative for maritime nuclear power

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced on Tuesday that the United Nations nuclear watchdog is preparing to launch a new initiative to advance civilian nuclear applications at sea, unveiling the plan during meetings with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in Washington, DC.

Maritime nuclear push

The initiative, titled Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS), is designed to facilitate the deployment of civil nuclear technology in maritime environments, including nuclear-powered ships and floating nuclear power plants. According to Grossi, the program could support global trade while providing energy solutions to remote communities and industrial operations that lack reliable grid access.

"Delighted to be with @ENERGY@SecretaryWright in Washington DC ahead of tomorrow's launch of ATLAS," Grossi wrote on the social media platform X, expressing gratitude for Washington's support. He said the discussions with Wright also addressed nuclear non-proliferation concerns, adding that the talks covered Iran's nuclear program and his recent visit to Syria where he noted that "important progress" was being made.

The ATLAS initiative is scheduled for official unveiling at an IAEA ministerial-level event hosted by the United States in Washington on August 26-27. The gathering will bring together international stakeholders to discuss regulatory frameworks and safety standards for the emerging sector of maritime nuclear power.
