President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call to discuss bilateral relations, regional and global issues. Erdoğan stressed the importance of mutual steps to strengthen ties and expressed Türkiye’s expectation of a “strong commitment” at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz held a phone call on Monday, during which they discussed regional and global issues as well as bilateral relations, Türkiye’s Communications Directorate said. Erdoğan stated that Türkiye aims to strengthen its relations with Germany and emphasised the importance of continuing to take mutual steps towards this goal.
NATO summit expectations and Ukraine
Erdoğan added that Türkiye expects a “strong commitment” at the NATO summit in Ankara to boost Europe’s defence and preserve the “transatlantic bond.” On the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the Turkish president touched upon Ankara’s efforts, saying Türkiye is working for lasting peace and the resumption of negotiations. The Ankara summit, scheduled for July 7-8, is expected to send a strong signal of support for Ukraine, with Merz having previously called for peace negotiations to begin.
German-Turkish cooperation
The call follows recent high-level engagements between the two countries, including a visit by Germany’s Minister for Economic Affairs to Ankara to promote closer economic ties, focusing on energy and critical minerals. Germany has also reaffirmed its willingness to participate in potential mine-clearance operations in the Strait of Hormuz, with two naval vessels pre-positioned for a possible mission.
