A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit Türkiye's eastern Malatya province early Saturday, with its epicentre in the Battalgazi district. The tremor was felt in several neighbouring provinces, but authorities reported no immediate damage or casualties.
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the eastern Turkish province of Malatya early on Saturday, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The tremor occurred at 6.20 am local time, with its epicentre in the Battalgazi district at a depth of 15.59 kilometres, AFAD said.
Widespread Tremors and Response
The quake was felt in several neighbouring provinces, including Elazığ, Adıyaman, Tunceli and Şanlıurfa. AFAD said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum also said on social media that "there have been no adverse findings so far, but we are evaluating all reports."
Seismic Context
Eastern Türkiye lies in a seismically active region, and occasional moderate earthquakes are not uncommon. The area has experienced significant earthquakes in the past, including the devastating 2023 quakes centred in Kahramanmaraş. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
