Turkish DefMin meets Japanese, BAE Systems officials ahead of NATO summit

Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler held separate meetings with Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and BAE Systems CEO Charles Woodburn in Ankara ahead of the NATO summit. No details of the discussions were disclosed, but the meetings underscore Türkiye’s growing defence partnerships.
Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler held separate meetings on Tuesday with Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Charles Woodburn, chief executive of BAE Systems, ahead of the 36th NATO Leaders' Summit in Ankara. Güler met Koizumi at the ATO Congresium, where leaders and senior officials are gathering for the summit. He also received Woodburn as defence industry executives convened alongside the alliance's annual meeting.
Summit priorities
Ahead of the summit, Güler described the Ankara gathering as a critical moment for NATO to reinforce alliance unity, increase defence investment and industrial production, strengthen deterrence, and maintain support for Ukraine. He also said NATO must preserve a 360‑degree approach to security and that allies should turn defence spending into combat‑ready forces, resilient infrastructure, and modern military capabilities, adding that Türkiye would continue contributing to the alliance's deterrence and defence efforts.
Defence partnerships
The meetings underscore Türkiye’s growing defence partnerships with both Japan and the UK-based BAE Systems. Japan has been expanding its ties with NATO and its partners, and Koizumi’s attendance marks the first time a Japanese defence chief has participated in a NATO summit. BAE Systems, one of the world’s largest defence contractors, has previously collaborated with Türkiye on projects including the KAAN fighter jet. The discussions may have addressed potential joint production and technology transfer opportunities.
