Turkish chief of staff announces that its military fired into Syria after a rocket from the war-torn country hits Turkish border area in Hatay province

Turkish artillery troops fired into Syria today in retaliation for a cross-border rocket which came from the war-torn country and landed on Turkish soil, wounding 5 Turkish nationals.

A bomb from Syria had fallen in an area in Hatay province which caused small damage to some buildings and residences.

The chief of staff said that the rocket landed near the Cüdeyde neighborhood, the southern part of Reyhanlı city, from fighting between the Syrian Military and the opposition groups.

The rocket also caused some small damage to near residences and some military equipment as it landed 200 meters west of the 4th Border Battalion of the 2nd Hatay Border Regiment.

“In accordance with our military engagement rules, our artillery units on the border fired into Syrian in response,” the chief of staff said.

The military along Turkey's Syria border often retaliates when munitions from fighting there hit its territory.

The statement said that the Turkish military follows the developments in the region with great concern and stated that it will continue to retaliate within the framework of engagement rules, if further similar incidents happen.
