Türkiye extends naval deployment in Gulf of Aden for another year

Türkiye has formally extended its naval mission in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and surrounding waters for one year, aiming to protect its commercial shipping, combat piracy, and support international maritime security efforts.
Türkiye has authorized a one-year extension of its naval forces' deployment in critical Middle Eastern waters, continuing its long-standing commitment to regional maritime security. A presidential decree published in the Official Gazette extends the mission in the Gulf of Aden, off Somalia's coast, the Arabian Sea, and adjacent areas from February 10, 2026.
Objectives of the Extended Deployment
The extension aims to safeguard Turkish-flagged vessels and those linked to Türkiye, contribute to international counter-piracy and anti-terrorism operations, support potential humanitarian aid missions, and enhance the Turkish Navy's operational experience and international cooperation. The motion frames the deployment as part of Türkiye's national and international obligations to uphold freedom of navigation, maritime security, and global stability in accordance with international law.
Türkiye's Established Role in Regional Security
Türkiye has been an active participant in international naval coalitions in the region since 2009. The Turkish Navy has repeatedly contributed to and commanded multinational task forces, including NATO's Operation Ocean Shield and the U.S.-led Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151), which it has led seven times between 2009 and 2025. This sustained engagement underscores Ankara's role as a significant security provider beyond its immediate neighborhood.

Legal and Operational Context
The presidential motion notes the complex legal landscape. While no new UN Security Council resolution has been adopted since 2022 to renew specific mandates for Somali territorial waters despite Somalia's request, international operations continue in adjacent areas under the longstanding UNSC Resolution 1851 (2008). The motion also references the European Union's decision to extend its Operation Atalanta until February 2027. Türkiye's continued presence ensures it remains a key player in this multinational security framework, protecting its economic interests and demonstrating its global naval reach.
