Two killed as police and PKK supporters clash in Southeast

The clashes between police and supporters of PKK leaves two dead in restive Yüksekova, security operation is still underway

At least two people were killed in the fierce clashes between security forces and members of the Patriotic Revolutionary Youth, or YDG-H, an affiliate of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, (PKK) in the southeasterm province of Hakkari on Monday.

The clashes erupted after the police launched a security operation in the province's Yüksekova town, still remains on the edge. The operation was conducted to remove roadblocks and close the ditches, dugged by PKK members earlier on the day.

PKK supporters, who had erupted barricades in side streets to prevent access to remote areas of the town, attacked the police by hurling at stones, oil bombs and fireworks. Police responded with heavy fire.

An unspecific number of police officers were involved in the first operation, which was conducted following the Sunday's election. Many shopkeepers have taken down their shutters for security reason.

At least two people were reportedly injured in the clashes, still ongoing in the restive Yüksekova. They later died at Yüksekova hospital where they were admitted immediatelty after the incident.

They have been identified as Doğan D. And Çetin D. There is no clear report whether or not the victims were affiliated with YDG-H or they were the two local residents, who wounded during the exchange of fire.
