Assam floods claim 100 lives as India begins damage assessment

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported two more flood-related deaths late Sunday, bringing the confirmed toll to 100. More than 2,000 relief centers are currently operating across the state to provide assistance to affected communities.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said rehabilitation work was continuing as authorities respond to the scale of the disaster. The government is coordinating relief distribution while preparing for the next stage of recovery in flood-hit districts.

Authorities begin household-level survey

Assam authorities also started a door-to-door assessment on Sunday to establish the extent of losses caused by the flooding. Officials are visiting affected households across the state to record damage and identify families requiring support.

Sarma said the survey will cover destroyed or damaged homes, livestock losses and other consequences of the floods. The government plans to complete the documentation process by Aug. 31.

Government pledges rehabilitation support

Sarma said authorities would use the assessment to ensure affected families receive the rehabilitation assistance to which they are entitled. “No family will be left behind,” he said, emphasizing that the damage survey is intended to provide a detailed record of losses.

With more than a million people affected, the assessment is expected to guide Assam’s recovery measures as authorities continue relief operations across the northeastern Indian state.
