Bahrain's Interior Ministry activated nationwide emergency sirens on Thursday and urged the public to seek immediate shelter, warning of a potential Iranian attack as regional tensions escalated over ongoing military exchanges between Tehran and Washington.

Emergency alert issued

The ministry issued an urgent alert as sirens sounded across the kingdom on Thursday afternoon. "The siren has been sounded," the ministry said, urging citizens and residents to "remain calm and head to the nearest safe place," though officials provided no immediate information regarding casualties or structural damage.

The alert warned of imminent danger without specifying the nature of the threat, though regional security sources indicated the measure responded to intelligence of potential Iranian missile strikes. Bahraini authorities have conducted similar drills in recent months as hostilities between Tehran and Washington intensified across the Gulf.

Regional tensions escalate

The activation came as Iran continued launching missile and drone attacks against Gulf Cooperation Council states hosting American military installations, responding to ongoing US strikes on Iranian territory. Washington and Tehran have exchanged fire for several weeks, with Tehran specifically targeting bases in Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates used by US Central Command operations.

Tehran has repeatedly accused Gulf monarchies of complicity in American military operations against Iranian nuclear and military sites. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for multiple ballistic missile launches targeting Al-Dhafra Air Base in the UAE and Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar earlier this week.

US military presence

No casualties or damage were reported in the immediate aftermath of the alert, according to Interior Ministry sources. The kingdom hosts the US Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters and has maintained close security cooperation with Washington amid the escalating confrontation between American forces and Iranian military units.

The Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama coordinates naval operations throughout the region and serves as a critical logistics hub for US forces. American military personnel in Bahrain number approximately 7,000, making the kingdom a significant target in any broader regional conflict.
