Burnham vows Labour will win by being 'boldly, authentically us'

Andy Burnham pledged on Friday to steer Britain's Labour Party in a distinctively left-wing direction, promising to unite the movement and shift power from Westminster to local communities after being elected leader. Speaking in his first address as leader, he outlined a five-point platform focused on party unity, constitutional reform and political renewal.

He pledged to build "one Labour team," create "a new politics" and represent "everywhere" in the United Kingdom while shifting authority from Westminster and Whitehall to local communities. The former mayor appeared emotional as he took the stage to thank members for their support, calling the result "a proud moment" for himself and his family.

Distinctive direction

Burnham said Labour would work with other parties where possible but would do so "from the clarity of knowing exactly where we stand." "As your leader, I will set a direction that is distinctively Labour," he said.

"We won't try to out-Green the Greens or out-Reform Reform or do what we've done in the past – wearing too many Tory clothes," he added. He aimed a pointed remark at Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, saying: "I'm quite happy that Kemi doesn't approve of my wardrobe choices because I'm not keen on theirs either."

'Authentically us'

The new leader said his approach marked a break from previous electoral strategies, adding that the party would succeed by embracing its core identity rather than imitating rivals. "From here we do it differently. We win by being us – boldly, confidently, authentically us – Labour," he said.

"This is a proud moment you have given me and my family today, and an emotional one, but it is one for which I am ready," Burnham added.
