China, Pakistan urge US and Iran to end hostilities and resume talks

China and Pakistan have jointly called on the United States and Iran to halt military hostilities and resume diplomatic dialogue, as tensions continue to escalate over the Strait of Hormuz. The appeal came during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Shanghai on Wednesday.

'Peace Is Within Reach'

Wang Yi emphasised that the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, brokered by Pakistan between Washington and Tehran, was "hard-won" and warned against losing the opportunity for peace. "Peace is within reach; we cannot afford to lose it now, let alone let it slip away," Wang said. Both ministers expressed concern over the deteriorating situation and called on the parties to overcome difficulties, eliminate interference and restart contacts.

Support for Pakistani Mediation

China reaffirmed its support for Pakistan's mediation role and pledged to continue playing a constructive part in de-escalation efforts. The call came amid six consecutive days of retaliatory strikes between the US and Iran, with the Islamabad MoU's core provisions remaining unfulfilled. The international community, Wang added, should continue to provide assistance to help achieve a comprehensive peace agreement.
