Erdogan offers condolences over death of former Qatari emir

Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday offered condolences on the death of Qatar's former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing the late monarch as a close friend who made major contributions to bilateral relations during his 18-year rule.

Presidential tribute

Posting on his social media account, Erdogan highlighted Sheikh Hamad's efforts to promote regional stability and prosperity for the Qatari people during his years as prime minister. "I learned with great sorrow of the passing of my very dear friend, the Father Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," Erdogan said, noting that he had worked alongside the former emir on the international stage. "On behalf of myself, my family and my nation, I convey my condolences to my dear brother, the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the family of the late Father Emir, the friendly and brotherly people of Qatar and the Islamic world," he added.

Foreign minister's message

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also expressed condolences on his social media account, describing the late emir as "a distinguished leader and a wise statesman." "We will always remember with gratitude the importance he attached to strengthening relations with Türkiye and his dedicated efforts to promote regional and global peace and stability," Fidan said. "We extend our deepest condolences to his family and the people of Qatar, and pray that God grants mercy to His Highness former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani," he added.

Reign and succession

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until 2013, when he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim, at the age of 61. The Qatari royal court announced his death on Sunday at the age of 74, prompting messages of condolence from leaders across the region. His reign saw the expansion of Doha's diplomatic and economic influence on the global stage.
