Extreme drought affects almost half of Czechia

The CzechGlobe Institute's InterSucho project reported Tuesday that extreme soil drought conditions now affect nearly half of Czechia, with the most severe shortages concentrated in the Moravia region. Around 40 percent of the country's land holds less than 15 millimeters of available water in the top meter of soil, according to the findings.

Agricultural Impact

Approximately 25 percent of Czech territory has dropped below 10 percent relative soil saturation — the wilting point where plants cannot extract sufficient moisture, researchers noted. Radio Prague International said the highest drought classification level now covers extensive portions of the country.

Regional Conditions

The drought monitoring team identified Moravia as the most affected area, though water shortages extend across diverse geographic zones throughout the Central European nation. CzechGlobe Institute scientists operate the InterSucho platform to provide real-time soil moisture assessment data to agricultural authorities.
