Iran warns peace pact depends on US compliance, urges UN action

Iran's ambassador to the United Nations on Friday called on the world body to take decisive action against the United States over alleged violations of international law. Amir Saeid Iravani warned that Tehran's adherence to last month's framework peace deal depends entirely on Washington fulfilling its obligations. His remarks came after US President Donald Trump told reporters that the June ceasefire was "over" despite agreeing to resume negotiations with Tehran.

"The United States bears full international responsibility for all legal and political consequences arising from its unlawful action," Iravani told reporters following a UN Security Council session. He noted that under the memorandum of understanding, responsibility for maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz — including reopening the waterway and conducting any necessary demining operations — rests exclusively with Iran.

Framework deal conditions

Iravani appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Security Council to intervene, citing their Charter duty to safeguard international peace and security. "They must take effective and decisive measures to stop the United States' unlawful act of aggression. They must prevent any further escalation. They must also ensure that the United States fully honors its obligation and is held accountable for its aggression," he stated.

Despite his sharp criticism of Washington, Iravani said Tehran remains committed to the framework agreement provided the US honors its commitments. "Iran remained committed to the faithful implementation of the memorandum of understanding, provided that the United States fully and faithfully complies with its own obligation. However, should the United States continue to violate its obligation under the MOU, Iran will no longer be bound to fulfill its obligation under the MOU," he added.
