Kazakhstan voices alarm over Black Sea drone attacks on oil tankers
Kazakhstan's foreign ministry has issued a formal statement of "serious concern" following drone attacks on three oil tankers navigating the Black Sea. The vessels were en route to a marine terminal used by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), a critical conduit for Kazakh oil exports to global markets.
Emphasis on neutrality and energy security
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yerlan Zhetybayev stressed that the targeted tankers possessed all necessary permits and identification. He reiterated that Kazakhstan is not involved in any armed conflict and plays a vital role in global energy security by ensuring uninterrupted resource supplies in compliance with international law. Kazakh diplomats have reportedly engaged with European and American counterparts to discuss securing oil transportation routes.
Russian accusations and a pattern of incidents
While no group has claimed responsibility, Russia's foreign ministry quickly attributed the January 13 attacks to Ukraine, expressing understanding for Kazakhstan's concerns. Moscow stated its support for Astana's call for joint steps to prevent future incidents. This event follows a series of similar attacks on CPC infrastructure since November 2025, which Russia has consistently blamed on Kyiv, alleging an aim to disrupt shipments by inflating insurance costs.

Regional implications and the search for security
The increasing frequency of such incidents highlights the growing risks to international energy infrastructure in the Black Sea, a region of strategic importance to many nations, including Türkiye. Kazakhstan warned that the pattern points to "growing risks" and called for closer international cooperation to develop preventive measures. Ukraine, which has previously stated its military actions are solely aimed at repelling Russian aggression and not at third parties like Kazakhstan, had not issued a response to the latest accusations at the time of reporting.
