Trump departs for NATO summit in Türkiye

US President Donald Trump has departed for Ankara to attend the NATO summit and hold a bilateral meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He will also hold separate meetings with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and Syrian President al‑Sharaa.
US President Donald Trump departed the White House late Monday for Ankara, Türkiye, where he will attend a NATO summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The presidential motorcade left the White House at 9:03 pm local time (0103GMT Tuesday) en route to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, with Air Force One taking off at 9:41 pm (0141GMT). Trump is expected to arrive in Ankara on Tuesday afternoon.
Delegation and schedule
Traveling with Trump aboard Air Force One are Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, White House Deputy Chiefs of Staff Dan Scavino and Stephen Miller, and Communications Director Steven Cheung. Trump will be welcomed by President Erdoğan in a state arrival ceremony and the two leaders will hold a meeting on bilateral issues, including defence, trade, and investment. On Wednesday, Trump will participate in an official welcome ceremony, a family photo, and a NATO leaders’ working session.
Bilateral meetings
Trump is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Syrian President Ahmad al‑Sharaa. The meeting with Zelenskyy comes amid continued US support for Ukraine and the ongoing war with Russia, while the meeting with Sharaa marks the first direct engagement between a US president and Syria’s new leadership since the fall of the Assad regime. The trilateral setting of the Ankara summit, with Türkiye as host, underscores Ankara’s role as a diplomatic hub bridging Europe, the Middle East, and the broader transatlantic alliance.
