Trump says US 'appreciates' Iran's release of detained American citizen

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Iran has released an American citizen who had been detained since December 2024. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the woman, who he described as "wrongfully detained" during the "presidency of Sleepy Joe Biden," had safely left Iran and was in good condition.

A Diplomatic Gesture Amid Escalation

"The United States of America appreciates this gesture of Goodwill by Iran," Trump wrote, thanking Tehran for the release. The move comes at a time when relations between the two countries have reached a critical point, with US forces striking Iranian targets and Tehran carrying out attacks on American military assets across the region in recent days.

The release of the American citizen, which could have signalled a diplomatic opening, has been overshadowed by the escalating military confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz. Despite a Pakistani-mediated framework agreement aimed at reaching a lasting settlement, both sides have exchanged heavy strikes in the Gulf, underlining the fragility of regional security.
