US forces redirect 55 vessels amid Iran blockade enforcement

The US military says its forces have redirected 55 commercial vessels as part of efforts to enforce a Washington-led blockade against Iran, while two other vessels were disabled and two were boarded, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM said American sailors were operating aboard the USS Ross, a guided-missile destroyer designated DDG 71, as part of the maritime force supporting US military operations in the Middle East.The vessel is among more than 20 US warships deployed to the region for missions that include enforcing the Iran blockade. CENTCOM did not disclose the identities of the commercial ships involved or explain the circumstances that led to the reported actions.
Tensions remain after renewed fighting
The latest maritime operations come against the backdrop of an unresolved confrontation between Washington and Tehran. The conflict began in February after the US and Israel launched a joint military campaign against Iran, prompting Iranian drone and missile attacks against Gulf states hosting US military facilities.
The two sides reached a ceasefire in April and later concluded a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding in June, with the stated aim of ending hostilities and establishing a longer-term framework for peace.
Diplomatic efforts face renewed uncertainty
The June arrangement subsequently broke down last month, leading to almost two weeks of renewed attacks between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump eventually ordered an end to the bombardment as reports emerged of diplomatic contacts aimed at containing the conflict.
CENTCOM’s latest announcement indicates that the maritime dimension of the confrontation remains active, with US forces continuing to enforce restrictions on commercial shipping connected to the Iran blockade.
