Between 2018 and 2023, antimicrobial resistance increased in more than 40% of the pathogen-antibiotic combinations monitored by the WHO global surveillance system. The report documented consistent annual resistance increases ranging from 5% to 15% across numerous countries. This concerning trend is based on data collected from over 100 nations participating in the WHO's Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System.

The WHO South-East Asia and Eastern Mediterranean regions demonstrated the highest resistance rates, with approximately one-third of reported infections showing resistance to standard treatments. Particularly worrying is the growing resistance of E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, common causes of bloodstream infections. More than half of global cases involving these pathogens now resist first-line antibiotic treatments, complicating treatment for urinary, gastrointestinal, and bloodstream infections, as well as gonorrhea.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that "antimicrobial resistance is outpacing advances in modern medicine, threatening the health of families worldwide." The organization has called on member states, including Türkiye, to strengthen laboratory capabilities and improve data sharing on antimicrobial resistance by 2030. This global challenge requires coordinated international action to prevent a return to the pre-antibiotic era where common infections could prove fatal.
