2 killed, toddler injured as train hits pedestrians in US

Two women pedestrians were killed and a toddler was injured when a train struck them on a railway bridge in Ohio's Fremont city, the local mayor said, who added that the search for a missing five-year-old child is ongoing following the incident on Sunday morning.

Mayor Danny Sanchez said the train struck and killed two women, ages 38 and 58, around 7.30 pm on a bridge about 40 feet above the Sandusky River in Fremont, which is about 40 miles southeast of Toledo, the New York Times reported.

Sanchez said a 1-year-old child was rescued from the river and taken to a hospital while emergency crews continued searching the river early Monday for a missing 5-year-old.

He did not provide information on the 1-year-old's condition, and it remains unclear whether either child was also hit by the train.

According to Sanchez, the four people appeared to be members of a large family who had come to Fremont from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to fish in the river, which is a popular spot for white bass fishing during the spring season.

“We believe they were simply here in the area trying to enjoy the Sandusky River,” he was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

The mayor also noted that the bridge was clearly marked for train use only.

The specific train line involved in the incident has not yet been identified.
