Ceremony marks 102nd anniversary of Çanakkale Victory Day
The Battle of Gallipoli was a campaign that eventually turned the tide in favor of the Ottoman Empire fighting against Allied powers. Ceremonies and celebrations were held nationwide to mark Çanakkale Victory Day.
The victory gave Turkey a massive morale boost which enabled it to wage a war of independence and eventually, in 1923, form a republic.
Heavily armored battle ships of the Allied Powers were defeated by fierce Ottoman resistance. The victory is seen as a demonstration of what Turks can accomplish in the name of homeland, religion, freedom and future.
The Dardanelles and Bosporus were geopolitically significant, as they allowed the control of political, commercial and military activities of the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions, and opened to Istanbul, the heart of the Ottoman Empire.
Turkish citizens gathered in Çanakkale to mark the 102nd anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli.
The Allied forces that launched the attack lost more than 300,000 of their approximately 490,000 troops, and the Ottoman Empire lost 250,000 of their 315,000 troops.
President Erdoğan and many officials attended the ceremony.
