Erdogan and Trump discuss Syria, Gaza peace, and defense cooperation

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump held a phone call addressing key regional issues, including the implementation of a ceasefire in Syria and the work of the Gaza Board of Peace. The leaders also discussed advancing bilateral trade and defense industry cooperation.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump conferred on Tuesday in a phone conversation focused on pressing regional matters and bilateral ties. The discussion centered on developments in Syria and Gaza, alongside opportunities to enhance Turkish-American cooperation, particularly in defense trade.
Focus on Syria's ceasefire and Gaza peace efforts
President Erdogan emphasized the critical importance of fully implementing the ceasefire and integration agreement in Syria, a process Ankara is monitoring in coordination with US and Syrian authorities. On Gaza, Erdogan expressed hope that the US-backed "Gaza Board of Peace," established by Trump and later authorized by the UN Security Council, would yield fruitful results. He stated that ending the humanitarian catastrophe and rebuilding the enclave were essential for lasting regional peace.
Advancing bilateral relations and trade
The call also served to review the broader bilateral relationship. Erdogan affirmed that Türkiye would continue taking steps to improve cooperation with the United States across all areas of mutual interest. A specific focus was placed on advancing trade relations, with discussions on enhancing cooperation in the defense industry sector, a key component of the economic partnership between the two NATO allies.
Context of ongoing violence and diplomatic steps
The diplomatic exchange occurs against a backdrop of significant Palestinian casualties. Since October 2023, the Israeli offensive has killed over 71,600 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and injured more than 171,300. Despite an existing ceasefire, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that Israeli attacks have continued, resulting in hundreds of additional Palestinian deaths and injuries since the truce took effect.
