Erdoğan: Israel dragging region toward disaster beyond 'security concerns'

Turkish president says attacks on Gaza, Yemen, Lebanon and Iran reveal broader agenda as conflict expands to new fronts.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan delivered a stark warning Tuesday that Israel's military actions are systematically pushing the Middle East toward catastrophe, driven by motives that extend far beyond claimed security needs. Speaking at an iftar event in Ankara, the Turkish leader offered a sweeping critique of the expanding regional conflict.

Deeper agenda revealed

"We all know that the attacks targeting Gaza first, then Yemen and Lebanon, and most recently Iran, are not solely motivated by security concerns," Erdoğan stated, suggesting a broader strategic design behind the ongoing military campaigns. He characterized Israel's leadership as "a network that considers itself superior to others" that is "dragging the region step by step toward a disaster." The comments reflect Ankara's growing alarm as fighting spreads across multiple fronts.

Conflict widens

The US-Israeli joint offensive against Iran, launched Feb. 28, has now claimed more than 1,200 lives including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting American military assets across Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries, causing casualties and infrastructure damage while disrupting global markets and aviation. Adding to the volatility, Israeli forces intensified airstrikes and artillery shelling across southern Lebanon Tuesday alongside a limited ground incursion, according to Lebanese army and state media, threatening to ignite another front in the expanding war.

Türkiye's position

Erdoğan's remarks underscore Türkiye's growing concern over the conflict's trajectory and its potential to engulf the entire region. By linking the attacks on Gaza, Yemen, Lebanon and Iran as part of a pattern, the president framed the current crisis as a continuum rather than isolated incidents, implicitly calling for international recognition of the conflict's underlying dimensions beyond immediate security rationales.
