The Turkish president condemned ongoing Israeli assaults during Ramadan, praising Gazans who break their fast amid ruins as an example of faith and resilience against oppression.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared Wednesday that Israel has continued to escalate its attacks on Gaza and the West Bank despite the ceasefire agreement that took effect October 10, 2025. Speaking at an iftar dinner in Ankara, Erdogan criticized what he described as ongoing Israeli aggression during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Ceasefire Violations

"Despite the Oct. 10 (2025) ceasefire, secured with also Türkiye's efforts, the Israeli government continues to escalate its attacks on Gaza and West Bank," Erdogan told attendees at the traditional fast-breaking meal. His remarks come amid reports that Israeli forces have committed hundreds of ceasefire violations since the truce began, with Gaza's Health Ministry reporting at least 615 Palestinians killed and over 1,600 injured despite the agreement intended to halt hostilities.

Gaza Resilience

The president praised the people of Gaza who break their fast in makeshift buildings amid the ruins, refusing to bow to oppression. He held up their perseverance as an example for Muslims through their faith, highlighting the contrast between the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the harsh realities faced by Palestinians under occupation. Erdogan's comments reflect Türkiye's longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and its criticism of Israeli policies in the occupied territories.

Continued International Concern

The ceasefire, brokered with Türkiye's involvement alongside Egypt and Qatar, was intended to halt Israel's two-year offensive that has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. Despite the agreement, international monitors have documented ongoing military operations, settlement expansion, and settler violence in both Gaza and the West Bank. Erdogan's statement adds to growing international concern that the ceasefire is failing to deliver lasting peace, particularly as Ramadan—a period normally marked by heightened religious observance and calm—instead sees continued bloodshed and destruction.
