Erdoğan marks Zero Waste Day with 90M tons of recovered waste

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan commemorated International Zero Waste Day on Monday by highlighting the remarkable achievements of Türkiye’s flagship environmental initiative. In a message shared on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Erdoğan stated that the Zero Waste Movement has enabled the recovery of 90 million tons of waste, generating 365 billion Turkish lira in economic value since its inception in 2017.
A global movement born in Türkiye
The initiative, launched under the leadership of First Lady Emine Erdoğan, began as a domestic effort to promote sustainable waste management and has since evolved into a global environmental movement. The United Nations General Assembly designated March 30 as International Zero Waste Day in 2022 following Türkiye’s initiative, recognizing the country’s leadership in this field.
Ambitious targets for the future
Erdoğan reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to combating climate change and environmental pollution, emphasizing that efforts in these areas will continue with determination. He outlined ambitious recycling targets, aiming to increase the recycling rate to 60 percent by 2035 and 70 percent by 2053, further solidifying Türkiye’s position as a pioneer in sustainable development.
