Erdoğan, Qatar emir discuss Iran truce as opportunity for lasting peace

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim that the two‑week US‑Iran ceasefire represents an important opportunity for durable stability and must not be wasted. Ankara will continue contributing to regional peace efforts, while appreciating Doha’s constructive stance amid escalating turmoil.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation Wednesday with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, focusing on the newly announced Iran ceasefire and the broader regional crisis, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
Ceasefire as a strategic window
During the call, Erdoğan stressed that the two‑week pause in hostilities between Washington and Tehran offers “an important opportunity” to achieve lasting peace and stability. He underlined that this window “should not be wasted” and reaffirmed that Türkiye will continue to actively contribute to peace initiatives in the coming period. The Turkish president also conveyed his well‑wishes to the Qatari leader following recent attacks that targeted Qatar, praising Doha’s “constructive stance” throughout the mediation process.
Regional escalation and mediation efforts
The leaders exchanged views on the fragile ceasefire and wider regional developments. Israel has been simultaneously striking Iran since February 28 and has also carried out airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon following a cross‑border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, despite a November 2024 ceasefire. After Pakistani mediation, US President Donald Trump announced a two‑week halt to attacks on Iran, saying Tehran had submitted a “workable” 10‑point proposal for negotiations. The announcement came less than two hours before a deadline Trump had repeatedly extended for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept a deal or face “the destruction of an entire civilization.”

Türkiye’s proactive diplomacy
Erdoğan’s call with the Qatari emir underscores Ankara’s sustained diplomatic engagement aimed at de‑escalation and regional stability. Türkiye has consistently called for a full implementation of the truce on the ground and offered support for the upcoming talks in Islamabad. The conversation also highlighted the close coordination between Ankara and Doha, two key regional actors working to prevent a wider conflagration and restore dialogue as the primary tool for conflict resolution.
