Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday received Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the capital Ankara. The closed-door meeting at the presidential complex came on the second day of the NATO summit. The summit in Ankara is bringing together leaders of the 32-member alliance as well as key partners to discuss Europe’s defence capacity, the alliance’s defence spending targets, military modernisation, and continued support for Ukraine.
Bilateral and regional issues
While no details were released about the content of the talks, the meeting provided an opportunity for the two leaders to address bilateral relations and regional issues. Italy and Türkiye have cooperated closely in defence, migration, and energy, though they have also had differences over Libya and the Eastern Mediterranean. The meeting comes amid heightened transatlantic tensions over burden-sharing, with President Trump having threatened to reduce the US role in NATO while maintaining cordial ties with Erdoğan.
Türkiye – a member of NATO for nearly 75 years – joined the alliance in 1952.
