Fidan stresses equal rights for Kurds as key to Syria’s stability

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that granting equal rights, citizenship, and a sense of belonging to all Syrians, including Kurds, is fundamental for lasting stability. He emphasized Türkiye's longstanding advocacy on the issue and called for an end to mutual demonization between communities.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has asserted that the future stability of Syria hinges on the guarantee of equal rights, freedoms, and a genuine sense of belonging for every citizen, with particular attention to the Kurdish population. Speaking in a live broadcast on CNN Turk, Fidan underscored that the Syrian government’s capacity to ensure these fundamentals for all groups is a critical determinant for the country's peace.
Türkiye's Historical Advocacy for Kurdish Rights
Fidan highlighted Türkiye's persistent diplomatic efforts concerning the status of Kurds in Syria, dating back to his tenure as head of the National Intelligence Organization. He revealed that during visits to Syria aimed at preventing civil war, Turkish officials, acting on President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's directives, consistently raised the issue. "A large portion of them do not have citizenship. They don't feel a sense of belonging. This feeling of not belonging will bring many problems," Fidan said, recalling Türkiye's intensive engagement on the matter.
The Need to Eradicate Toxic Narratives
The Foreign Minister identified deep-seated mistrust among communities as a major obstacle, fueled by what he described as mutual demonization. He pointed to harmful generalizations that falsely label all Sunni Arabs as ISIS members and all Kurds as affiliates of the PKK or its Syrian wing, the YPG. "Now, these toxic perceptions need to be eliminated so that there are no security problems," Fidan stated, emphasizing that overcoming these stereotypes is essential for security and coexistence.
Positive Signs and a Path Forward
Expressing measured optimism, Fidan commended the recent approach of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and his associates for demonstrating what he termed a constructive and responsible perspective. He noted the absence of reports of massacres or abuses against civilians in areas under their control as a significant positive development. "Hopefully, this chapter will also close in a positive way for both the Kurds and the Arabs. Türkiye will then assume that its national security concerns have been addressed, and Syria will move towards a better future," Fidan concluded.
