Germany calls for stronger EU-Türkiye strategic cooperation

Johann Wadephul on Monday called for closer relations between the European Union and Türkiye, saying deeper strategic cooperation would benefit both sides.
Speaking in Berlin alongside Hakan Fidan after talks under the Strategic Dialogue Mechanism, Wadephul said the discussions focused on EU-Türkiye relations, economic cooperation, and security and defense issues.
“From the German government’s perspective, it is highly desirable that we continue to expand the strategic relations between Türkiye and the European Union,” he said, highlighting security and defense among areas of common interest.
Germany backs broader role for Türkiye
Wadephul said Germany supports taking Türkiye fully into account as the European Union develops defense policies and industrial initiatives aimed at strengthening Europe’s military capabilities.
He described Türkiye as an important NATO ally and a major trading partner for the EU.
Support for Customs Union modernization
The German foreign minister also reiterated Berlin’s support for modernizing the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and said Germany would contribute positively to Türkiye’s European Union accession process.
He added that if Türkiye seeks EU membership, Germany would remain “a friendly and reliable partner,” while noting that full membership depends on meeting the bloc’s political and economic criteria.
