Seven killed in training mission crash in Qatari waters; Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan and Syria express solidarity with Ankara and Doha.

Gulf countries alongside Iraq, Jordan and Syria extended their condolences Sunday to Türkiye and Qatar following a helicopter crash in Qatari territorial waters that claimed the lives of Turkish and Qatari military personnel as well as technicians from Turkish defense firm ASELSAN. The unified expression of sympathy underscored regional solidarity during a time of heightened tensions.

Regional messages of solidarity

In separate statements shared on X, the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan and Syria conveyed their condolences to Ankara and Doha. The messages emphasized the strong bonds between the nations and expressed solidarity with the families of those lost in the tragedy.

Details of the incident

Türkiye's National Defense Ministry announced earlier Sunday that the helicopter, belonging to the Qatari Armed Forces, crashed late Friday while conducting training activities under the Qatar-Turkish Combined Joint Force Command. Initial findings point to a technical malfunction as the cause. Among the seven fatalities were one Turkish Armed Forces member and two ASELSAN technicians, alongside Qatari military personnel. Qatari authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Context of regional tensions

The accident occurred against the backdrop of escalating hostilities in the Middle East following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began Feb. 28. Iran has responded with repeated drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets. The tragedy struck during a period when regional military cooperation remains critical, highlighting the shared sacrifices of allied forces operating together in a volatile environment.
