The Istanbul Forest Innovation Week has convened scientists and experts from 75 countries to shape future forestry policies. Turkish officials highlighted national conservation efforts while FAO representatives praised Türkiye's leadership in sustainable forestry.
The Istanbul Forest Innovation Week (IFIW) entered its third day on Wednesday, featuring high-level discussions on international forestry partnerships with participants from 75 nations and 30 global organizations. Organized by Türkiye's General Directorate of Forestry in cooperation with UNFF and FAO, the five-day event has drawn over 400 experts to shape future global forest policies, with Anadolu Agency serving as global communication partner.
Türkiye's Forestry Leadership
Deputy Director General of Forestry Ibrahim Yuzer detailed Türkiye's recent initiatives in forest resource expansion and fire prevention during the conference. "We are undertaking significant work, working diligently to combat fires and expand, develop and protect forests," Yuzer stated. He emphasized that the decisions and reports emerging from the Istanbul gathering would yield substantial benefits for both Türkiye's forestry sector and global forest conservation efforts.
International Recognition and Cooperation
FAO Subregional Coordinator for Central Asia Nabil Gangi acknowledged Türkiye's pioneering role in forest sustainability and afforestation efforts. "I thank Türkiye for always being a leader in the sustainability of forests and afforestation," Gangi remarked. The coordinator outlined that subsequent sessions would focus specifically on innovation's impact on forest management and restoration, alongside discussions about intergenerational dialogue within the forestry sector.
Climate Challenges and Future Directions
Ewald Rametsteiner, Deputy Director of the FAO Forestry Division, addressed the urgent need for forests to adapt to climate change risks and increasing resource demands. "We need to bring forests into the spotlight. We have the opportunity to shape the future together in this area," Rametsteiner urged, emphasizing that the FAO stands ready to support member nations in forestry development. He called for strengthened cooperation, awareness campaigns, and enhanced innovation culture to address global forestry challenges.
