Turkey's football legend dies of respiratory infection in Istanbul
Besiktas legend Süleyman Seba, regarded one of the greatest figures of all time in the Turkish sport world, passed away on late Wednesday.
The 88-year-old succumbed to respiratory infection and had been held under treatment in Istanbul's American Hospital.
Besiktas confirmed the news, saying Seba, their honorary president, died at 20:37
His death sent shockwaves across the country, with prominent people expressing condolences and sympathies to the Besiktas.
Senior officials including the President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the outgoing Abdullah Gül issued messaged of condolence for his death. Besiktas' arch rival Galatasaray also offered sympathies.
A former Besiktas player, Süleyman Seba won the hearts and minds of the Turkish people with his sportman like attitude which made him a legend during his term as the chairman of the club between 1984-2000.
Under his presidency, Besiktas won 22 titles in total including five domestic league titles, five Turkish Presidency Cup trophies and four Turkish Cup titles.
