Syria becomes top destination for Türkiye's flour exports

Syria has emerged as the leading market for Türkiye's flour exports, displacing Iraq from the top position for the first time in 15 years. Turkish flour shipments to Syria reached 529,000 tons in the first ten months of 2024, with year-end projections targeting 650,000 tons.
Türkiye's flour export landscape has undergone a significant transformation, with Syria replacing Iraq as the primary destination for the first time in fifteen years. According to data from the International Association of Operative Millers (IAOM) Eurasia, this shift reflects changing regional market dynamics and Türkiye's growing export capacity, with the flour sector showing remarkable growth despite global economic challenges.
Export Performance and Targets
The Turkish flour industry demonstrated strong performance in October, shipping 241,000 tons—a 39% increase compared to the same period last year—bringing the January-October total to 1.93 million tons valued at $716 million. IAOM Eurasia President Eren Gunhan Ulusoy announced that the sector aims to reach 2.4 million tons by the end of 2024, building on the momentum gained in the final quarter of the year.
Syrian Market Expansion
Exports to Syria have shown particularly dramatic growth, increasing from 267,000 tons in 2023 to 326,000 tons in 2024, with the January-October period reaching 529,000 tons. Ulusoy projected that year-end exports to Syria would hit 650,000 tons, effectively doubling the previous year's figures. This expansion positions Syria as Türkiye's leading flour export market, underscoring the deepening economic ties between the neighboring nations.
Iraqi Market Contraction
Meanwhile, flour exports to Iraq have declined substantially, dropping from a 10-month average of 1 million tons to 350,000 tons. Industry analysts attribute this decrease to increased domestic flour production capacity in Iraq and the implementation of new tax tariffs that have affected Turkish export competitiveness. This market realignment highlights the dynamic nature of regional trade relationships and Türkiye's ability to adapt to changing economic conditions.
