Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan meets with representatives of the “Finnish Islamic Congregation,” the umbrella association of Tatar compatriots, during his official visit to Helsinki, Finland, on November 4, 2025.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has begun a two-day official visit to Finland, where he will meet with his counterpart and address parliament. The trip aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in defense, technology, and energy while strengthening coordination within NATO.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has commenced a two-day diplomatic visit to Finland, marking a significant engagement between the two NATO allies. During his stay, Fidan is scheduled to hold high-level meetings with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen and Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho, in addition to delivering an address at the Finnish parliament on Turkish-Finnish cooperation.

Strengthening NATO Partnership and Bilateral Relations

The visit represents an important opportunity to strengthen the NATO alliance following Finland's accession in 2023. Fidan is expected to emphasize Türkiye's commitment to Euro-Atlantic security and discuss enhanced cooperation in defense industries. The talks will also focus on expanding economic ties beyond the current $1.8 billion trade volume, with particular attention to emerging sectors like information technology, cybersecurity, and renewable energy.

Addressing Regional Security and International Issues

Beyond bilateral matters, Fidan's agenda includes coordinating positions on pressing international security challenges. He is expected to outline Türkiye's potential mediating role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and emphasize the urgent need for maintaining the Gaza ceasefire while ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian aid delivery. The discussions will also cover joint initiatives in multilateral forums, including the UN and OSCE where both countries co-chair the Friends of Mediation Group.

Historical Ties and Future Cooperation

The diplomatic relationship between Türkiye and Finland dates back to 1924 with the signing of a Treaty of Friendship. Fidan's visit builds upon President Alexander Stubb's official trip to Türkiye earlier this year and highlights the growing strategic importance of the relationship. The Turkish community in Finland, along with the Tatar community with whom Fidan met, represents important human bridges between the two nations as they develop their partnership within the NATO framework.
