Turkish TV dramas strengthen Bangladesh ties through cultural diplomacy

Bangladesh’s ambassador to Ankara says Turkish television dramas have significantly strengthened cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties between the two nations over the past decade. The widespread popularity of series like "Kara Sevda" and "Kuruluş Osman" has fostered mutual understanding and inspired growing interest in Turkish culture, cuisine, and tourism among Bangladeshis.
Turkish television dramas have emerged as a powerful tool of cultural diplomacy, significantly enhancing relations between Türkiye and Bangladesh over the last ten years. According to Bangladesh's ambassador to Ankara, these series have created profound people-to-people connections that extend into economic and diplomatic spheres.
Cultural Resonance and Popularity
Ambassador Amanul Haq, in an interview with Anadolu Agency, stated that Turkish dramas have become "an important bond" between the two countries. He emphasized that Bangladeshi audiences deeply relate to the themes of family, faith, honor, and justice portrayed in series such as Kara Sevda, Muhteşem Yüzyıl (known locally as Sultan Suleiman), and Kuruluş Osman. These shows, often dubbed into Bengali by channels like Deepto TV, enjoy particular popularity among younger viewers.
Beyond Entertainment: Economic and Social Impact
The influence of these dramas extends far beyond television screens. Ambassador Haq noted a tangible increase in the popularity of Turkish cuisine, fashion, and language in Bangladesh. Turkish restaurants are becoming more common in Dhaka, and many middle-class households now use Turkish products. This cultural familiarity has also boosted tourism, with more Bangladeshis expressing interest in visiting Türkiye.
Strengthened Bilateral Relations
This cultural connection has provided a solid foundation for closer political and economic engagement. The ambassador revealed that due to strong public interest, Bangladesh has proposed opening a Yunus Emre Institute branch to further promote Turkish language and culture. The dramas, Haq explained, project Türkiye as a nation with a rich Islamic heritage and modern capabilities, thereby enhancing its soft power and encouraging deeper bilateral ties.
