Ankara has strongly rejected European Parliament resolutions containing what it termed "baseless allegations" regarding Syria policy and claims about journalists and Christians in Türkiye. The Foreign Ministry urged EU lawmakers to pursue constructive engagement rather than attempting to interfere in Türkiye's internal affairs.

Türkiye delivered a firm rebuke Friday to European Parliament resolutions it characterized as containing unfounded accusations, categorically rejecting claims concerning the situation in northeast Syria and alleged mistreatment of foreign journalists and Christians. The Foreign Ministry statement dismissed the texts as disconnected from realities on the ground and urged the European body to focus on constructive bilateral engagement rather than adopting "misguided and ill-intentioned measures."

Syria Resolution Ignores Türkiye's Stabilization Role

The ministry specifically criticized the resolution on northeast Syria for disregarding Ankara's substantial contributions to the country's recovery and stabilization efforts. It called on European Parliament to make greater efforts to understand "realities on the ground and the aspirations of Syria and the Syrian people" instead of advancing what it described as counterproductive measures. Türkiye has been actively engaged in counterterrorism operations and facilitating conditions for Syrian refugees' voluntary return.

Rejection of Media and Religious Freedom Claims

The statement dismissed allegations in a resolution titled "Targeted expulsions of foreign journalists and foreign Christians in Türkiye" as contrary to facts, emphasizing that no foreign institution can interfere in Turkish judicial proceedings. Ankara underscored that claims regarding freedom of expression and religion misrepresent the country's legal framework and social realities. The ministry reiterated that Türkiye protects the rights of all its citizens regardless of faith or profession while maintaining sovereign authority over judicial processes.

Call for Constructive EU Relations

The Foreign Ministry urged European Parliament to take "constructive steps" advancing Türkiye-EU relations rather than "being instrumentalized for efforts against our country and attempting to interfere in our internal affairs." The statement reflects ongoing tensions between Ankara and Brussels, with Türkiye expecting its European counterparts to recognize its strategic importance and engage on basis of mutual respect rather than unilateral criticism.
