Türkiye, Spain call for united global stance against Israeli flotilla raid

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stressed the need for a unified international stance against Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters off Crete. The flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid and hundreds of civilians to Gaza, aiming to break Israel’s 2007 blockade.
Türkiye and Spain issued a joint call on Thursday for a unified international response to Israel’s illegal interception of a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid flotilla. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares spoke by phone early Thursday, emphasizing “the need for a unified international stance against the unlawful intervention,” according to Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli. Keceli wrote on X that the Israeli operation “endangered the lives of numerous civilians of various nationalities and violated international law.”
The flotilla incident
The Israeli navy intercepted vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla late Wednesday as they sailed toward Gaza. The group said Israeli forces surrounded the convoy in international waters near the Greek island of Crete, jammed communications, and seized several vessels. The flotilla, carrying nearly 1,000 activists from multiple countries on about 100 boats, aimed to break Israel’s longstanding blockade and open a humanitarian sea corridor to Gaza. Israel has imposed the blockade since 2007, and the war has left approximately 1.5 million Palestinians homeless out of a population of roughly 2.4 million.
Diplomatic coordination
The call between Fidan and Albares underscores growing European concern over Israel’s actions. Spain has been one of the most critical EU member states regarding Israeli operations in Gaza and Lebanon. For Türkiye, which has a history of confrontations with Israel over aid flotillas—including the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident in which nine Turkish activists were killed—the interception is a direct provocation. Ankara has already condemned the act as “piracy” and is coordinating with other nations on next steps.
