Türkiye's Altay tank to receive domestic engine in defense industry milestone

The Altay main battle tank will transition from South Korean to domestically produced power systems, with the BATU Power Group expected to reach operational maturity by late next year. BMC Power's new Ankara facility will manufacture engines for multiple defense platforms.
Türkiye's Altay main battle tank will incorporate a completely domestic power system, achieving a significant milestone in the nation's defense industry independence. The transition from the currently used South Korean power pack to the homegrown BATU Power Group will eliminate foreign dependency for the tank's operational capabilities, with testing and development phases for the indigenous system already underway.
Production Timeline and Transition Strategy
Initial Altay tank production will utilize the South Korean power group for approximately 85 units before transitioning to the domestic system. The Korean power pack will remain in service until 2028, while the BATU Power Group is projected to reach full operational maturity by the end of next year. This phased approach ensures continuous production while developing and validating the domestic alternative.
BMC Power's Manufacturing Capabilities
BMC Power, the Turkish defense company leading the engine development, is producing multiple engine variants with capacities ranging from 400 to 1,500 horsepower at its newly inaugurated facility in Ankara. The manufacturing plant will supply domestic engines and transmission systems not only for the Altay tank but also for the Fırtına self-propelled howitzer and various next-generation armored vehicles and naval platforms.
Strategic Defense Industry Implications
The development represents a crucial step in Türkiye's comprehensive defense industrialization strategy, reducing reliance on foreign technology transfers and enhancing military self-sufficiency. The domestically powered Altay variant, equipped with the complete BATU Power Group, is scheduled for readiness by late next year, marking a significant achievement in Türkiye's defense technology capabilities.
