Türkiye’s zero waste foundation to launch global framework ahead of COP31

Ahead of hosting next year's UN climate summit, Türkiye’s Zero Waste Foundation is crafting a global framework to combat waste. Foundation head Samed Agirbas stated they will lead critical decisions on waste and food loss reduction during COP31, leveraging a model that began locally and has gained international recognition.
Türkiye's Zero Waste Foundation is developing a comprehensive global framework on waste management, set to be unveiled when the nation hosts the pivotal UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in 2026. Foundation Chairman Samed Agirbas announced the initiative, positioning Türkiye to steer international policy on reducing waste and preventing food loss at the global gathering.

A Model Scaled to Global Ambition
Agirbas explained that the foundation, established in 2023 under the honorary presidency of First Lady Emine Erdoğan, aims to ensure the sustainability of Türkiye's pioneering Zero Waste Project. "During COP31, we will take a leading role in advancing decisions on waste reduction and preventing food waste, which critically impact the world's future," he stated. This follows the international success of Türkiye’s zero waste model, which led to a UN General Assembly resolution establishing March 30 as the International Day of Zero Waste, co-sponsored by 105 countries.

Diplomatic Path to COP31 Leadership
The foundation’s global push is part of coordinated climate diplomacy efforts spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change. Türkiye secured the COP31 presidency, to be shared with Australia, following negotiations at COP30 in Brazil. Agirbas emphasized that the zero waste philosophy transcends politics and highlighted plans to actively engage the nation’s youth in the COP31 process, viewing their involvement as crucial for long-term impact.

The Stakes of the Antalya and Istanbul Summit
The 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) will be held from November 9-20, 2026, with main sessions in Antalya and a leaders' summit in Istanbul. As the supreme body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the COP will bring together nearly 200 countries to negotiate key aspects of the Paris Agreement, including new emission targets and climate finance. Türkiye’s introduction of a zero waste framework aims to place circular economy principles at the heart of these critical discussions.
