UK thunderstorm warning follows record-breaking May heat

The UK Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for large parts of England and Wales, cautioning that heavy rain, lightning strikes and localized flooding could disrupt travel and damage infrastructure following a record-breaking spell of May heat.
Thunderstorm alert
The yellow weather warning covers much of Wales and parts of southwest England including Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, and Bournemouth. It will remain in force until midnight, with forecasters cautioning that intense rainfall, hail and frequent lightning could develop through the afternoon and evening.
Met Office meteorologists warned that sudden downpours could lead to localized flooding in some areas, while lightning strikes may cause short-term power cuts and minor damage to buildings. Drivers were advised to expect hazardous conditions due to surface water and spray, particularly during the evening commute.
Record temperatures
The alert follows a record-breaking spell of May heat that saw temperatures soar across parts of the UK earlier this week. Warm and humid conditions have increased atmospheric instability, raising the probability of intense thunderstorms developing rapidly, the agency noted.

Forecasters said the unsettled weather is expected to bring an end to the recent hot spell, with cooler temperatures predicted for later in the week.
