1 dead, 3 injured in stabbings at Texas university

One person was killed and three others injured on Monday after a lone suspect went on a stabbing spree at a university in the capital of the U.S. state of Texas.

The suspect, identified by police as Kendrex J. White, a 21-year-old University of Texas at Austin student, has been taken into custody.

Campus Police Chief David Carter updated earlier casualty counts, raising the number of injured from two to three, and confirming one victim had died.

"This is something that obviously rattles any community, and certainly a college campus community like ours," Carter told reporters.

There is no ongoing threat to the university, but campus police will work longer shifts to reassure the community, he added.

Carter said the suspect was armed with a large Bowie hunting knife, and that all four victims were male students.Three of the victims were white, and the other was Asian, he said.

All were allegedly assaulted near the university's Gregory Gym by White, who is black.

Police did not yet ascertain a motive for the deadly rampage.

The wounded are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, Carter said.
