Bomb Targets Home of Italian Journalist Sigfrido Ranucci Near Rome

An explosive device detonated outside the home of prominent Italian journalist Sigfrido Ranucci on the outskirts of Rome, in an act of intimidation that has shaken Italy. The blast caused significant damage to two cars parked near his property in the Campo Ascolano area, one of which belonged to his daughter who had left the scene just minutes earlier. Ranucci confirmed the attack on his Instagram, stating the powerful explosions shook the entire neighborhood.

Investigation and Official Response

Italian police, anti-terrorism DIGOS units, and firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene. The anti-mafia prosecutor's office in Rome has opened an investigation into the incident, officially classifying it as criminal damage aggravated by the use of mafia methods. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the act as a "cowardly and unacceptable attack" that strikes at the heart of information freedom.

A Journalist Under Threat

Sigfrido Ranucci, the host of the investigative program "Report," has lived with police protection for nearly a decade, a measure initiated in 2014 following repeated death threats linked to his exposés on organized crime. He revealed that the explosive device was rudimentary and noted that he and his family have faced numerous threats over the years, including recent instances involving P38 bullets left outside his home.

Widespread Condemnation

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her full solidarity with Ranucci and the strongest condemnation of the serious act of intimidation, underscoring that information freedom is a cornerstone of democracy. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and Rai state broadcaster, Ranucci's employer, also issued statements denouncing the cowardly act and reaffirming their commitment to protecting journalistic independence. Fortunately, the explosion resulted in no physical injuries.
